The rocks of the Colorado Plateau represent a diversity of environmental conditions over hundreds of millions of years. These rocks are well exposed in the many canyons that occur across this region, most spectacularly in the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona (Figure ).The oldest fossils known from the Colorado Plateau region are stromatolites —layered domes of carbonate sediment formed by. Northeast movement of the Colorado Plateau resulted in left shift on the north side of the plateau where it is hounded by the Uinta uplift and right shift on the east side adjacent to the Nacimiento uplift. Taxonomy. The type species of Arganasaurus, A. lyazidi, was originally described as Metoposaurus lyazidi by Dutuit () on the basis of skulls found in the Argana Formation of northern Morocco. Hunt () found the species generically distinct from the Metoposaurus type species to warrant its own genus, which he named Arganasaurus.. The nominal species "Metoposaurus" azerouali Dutuit, Family: †Metoposauridae. Description. The holotype specimen of K. elysiae is a juvenile, as shown by unfused neural spines and would have stood about metres ( ft) high at the hip. The adult size of Kayentavenator is unknown. The inclusion of a pubic fenestra is one of the characteristics that Gay uses to set Kayentavenator apart from the contemporaneous, and better known : †Kayentavenator, Gay,

Dictyocephalus is an extinct genus of prehistoric temnospondyls; the only species is Dictyocephalus taxon was one of the first metoposaurids to be discovered in North America, being discovered by Ebeneezer Emmons and briefly described by Joseph Leidy in in the Newark supergroup exposures of Chatham County, North Carolina. At the time, Leidy was uncertain of much Class: Amphibia.

Today, Colorado retains evidence of its Mesozoic history in fossils, geographic formations and natural history landmarks. The Mesozoic Era. The Mesozoic (meaning "middle life") Era, or the Age of Dinosaurs, occurred to 65 million years ago at the end of the Paleozoic Era.

At that time, the Colorado Plateau separated from Pangea, the. I have been selling rare, antiquarian and used geology and natural history books for nearly twenty years and bring to this endeavor a wealth of experiences and knowledge gained from my more, hands-on geological studies.

I know the literature and have a solid grounding in the history of geology and paleontology as a science.

3: The Mesozoic Era The next chapter in Earth's history corresponds to the Mesozoic Era, or "middle life" -- to 70 million years ago. Read "pages" and discover that dinosaurs lived and died, birds evolved from reptiles, and the first primitive mammals appeared. The Mesozoic Era began approximately million years ago (mya) at the end of the Paleozoic Era when the area that would eventually be the Colorado Plateau broke free from Pangea, the supercontinent.

The Mesozoic is divided into three time periods: Triassic ( mya), Jurassic ( mya), and Cretaceous ( mya). (PDF) Dickinson, William R., Kelley N.

Coelophysis kayentakatae is an extinct species of coelophysid dinosaur that lived approximately million years ago during the early part of the Jurassic Period in what is now the southwestern United States.

Originally included in the genus Syntarsus, it has been reclassified as Coelophysis along with the African species, Coelophysis rhodesiensis. The name C. kayentakatae refers to Dr Clade: Dinosauria.Department of Geology, Box Northern Arizona University. City: Flagstaff Province or State: AZ Colorado Plateau, in Longman M, W.

and Sonnenfeld, M. D. (eds), Paleozoic systems of the Rocky Mountain Region: Rocky.Uplift of the Colorado Plateau was a key step in the eventual formation of Grand Canyon.

The action of plate tectonics lifted the rocks high and flat, creating a plateau through which the Colorado River could cut down. The way in which the uplift of the Colorado Plateau occurred is puzzling.
